    Assistant Editor

Want to get paid for being curious? Do you enjoy learning and passing along new stuff? Do you get satisfaction planning, promoting, and executing a big group project? You can do all those things and more as an assistant editor at Hanley Wood.

We’re the nation’s leading company for news and insights involving residential and commercial construction, one of the biggest parts of the U.S. economy. We have an opening on the team that covers—and uncovers—news involving remodelers, home builders, and construction supply companies. Hundreds of thousands of people across North America read and rely on us every day for information.

Your job will include digging up that information from a myriad number of sources and then finding the best way to present it. Doing so will challenge and broaden your communication skills. We can help you learn to write concisely, quickly, and above all accurately, as well as use tools like social media, content management systems, email systems, Excel, graphics tools, PowerPoint, and video to tell your stories. Naturally, the more skills you can bring to the job, the more interested we’ll be. An outgoing personality and desire to talk with and learn from others is a great start.

At Hanley Wood, we’re all about building a relationship with the audience. Sometimes that means we tell them stuff they don’t know. At other times, we invite them to share information about themselves and their projects that we then combine into projects like the Remodeling Design Awards, the ProSales Excellence Awards, the Big50 quality recognition, and the ProSales 100 and Remodeling 550 lists of the biggest construction supply companies and remodeling firms. These projects often take months to execute, and we’ve found the best people are able to organize tasks, set deadlines, and work steadily toward creating some of the most valuable, most treasured reports in our world. Again, curiosity and an outgoing attitude help these projects succeed.

Craft your resume and write a killer cover letter to show us just how curious you are and what you’ve done to pass along what you’ve learned. An education in journalism and past experiences in communications will move you up the list of candidates. So will examples of how you have organized (or played a key role in) projects.

How people get and process the news has changed dramatically in recent years, but one thing hasn’t changed: People want to know stuff, particularly stuff that can help them succeed personally and financially. This assistant editor job will enable you to make connections with people across the continent, in ways that will have them welcome you whenever you make a call or deliver a story. And the skills you’ll learn will help you no matter where your career takes you next.

Qualified Candidates will possess the following:

    • Minimum bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism or a related discipline.
    • Demonstrated writing and editing skills in a professional setting.
    • Ability to communicate objectives and goals to fellow staffers and to senior management
    • Familiarity with writing, editing, computation, web, and pagination software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; basic web programs like Google Docs, simple databases; social media systems such as Facebook; and professional editing programs like InCopy, WoodWing, and WordPress.
    • Strong sense of professionalism as well as a willingness to adapt in line with our business needs.
    • Experience in construction and/or material distribution helpful but not required.

*Please include a cover letter along with your application.
